Memoirs Of A Geisha

Last weekend I attended a house party for my friends birthday and the theme was 'Around The World'. I love getting creative around a good theme however I loathe to spend money on an outfit you are going to wear once - I'm a tight-arse!!  Therefore the creativity usually comes into customising current pieces or if the look calls for it, make-up.  This look is allll about the make-up :) Although I am obsessed with watching make-up tutorials - I thank God for the likes of PixiWoo, Lisa Eldridge, Tanya Burr everyday - I rarely step outside of my neutral eye, bright lip combination as it is where I feel comfortable and socially acceptable! However at fancy dress parties you can pretty much get away with anything so it is an awesome time to experiment - that is where my outrageous eyes, blue eye-shadow, red lip 80s type combo came in!!

So in my wardrobe I had a kimono already and because I have big eyes I can get away with rather exaggerated eye make-up so thought a Geisha would be a good choice for me.  Minimal clothing effort, maximum make-up artistry!  I went for an extremely lined eye, a blue eye-shadow with neutral tones, massive falsies and a sharp red lip.  Eye palettes used were the white matte and midnight blue shadows from Stila 'In The Light' palette (amazing palette) and the turquoise shade from the Sleek Mediterranean palette.  Also used was the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Natural Beauty as cheeks needed to be really pigmented and long-lasting, check check!  I recently go this blusher from America, it was my only NEED item from the whole trip, and I absolutely bloody love it!!

Also to achieve the look I used lots of concealer - YSL touche eclat, 17 phwooar paint - and Garnier Light Roll-On Anti Dark Circles to further lighten the area.  I very sharply lined the lips and used lots of red lipstick for an exaggerated pout.  Of course the hair was a very tight bun complete with diffuser sticks - as you do!!  Hope you like the look.  What would you go as for an around the world theme?

Work- Wear Wednesday: Watercolour Dream

I recently joined Instagram, I know I'm so behind the times - I've always been very technologically ancient!! My user name is ruhavingagiraffe for anyone that is interested.  I decided to join an Evening Standard competition as it was simply a case of uploading a smart outfit which (I hope) I wear every day.  As such I thought I would share a few of the photos with you.

The dress is a recent Zara purchase and is in this glorious watercolour type print.  I really enjoy the artistry behind watercolour prints especially when against a neutral background, as in this case, as it emphasises the print.  I actually bought this a few weeks ago and put off wearing it however I then saw it on Alex Jones on Sports Relief and it looked lovely on her, which made me want to wear it IMMEDIATELY!!

It is in your typical pencil dress shape with no sleeves, which is perfect for this time of year.  I don't know about you but I was roasting in my office this afternoon!  I decided to pick out the pinky/blue tones in the dress and accessorized with these shades.

Zara are having an amazing season at the moment so I am thinking of compiling a wishlist that has been steadily growing over the past few weeks.  Cannot wait for their sale to start, dangerous!!

Walking Tall 3: Girly Gingham

Midi skirts aahh so fashionable and ladylike however can be difficult to pull off.  I do think it's a lot of tosh to say only tall people can wear midi skirts as they can look lovely on all shapes and sizes, however you do need to be careful of the length.  Case in point Exhibit A  Topshop white quilted midi skirt.  As this is quite a structured skirt with a hefty length it would be a bit of a struggle on the more petite figures.  However if you are working with some height (naturally or with heels) I think this looks very playful and elegant.  For reference this was in the 'normal' section and this hits my mid calf area (I am 5ft11).   I can imagine Audrey Hepburn swanning around in this, and let me tell you I would have worn this had I owned it last year when I went to see Roman Holiday at South Bank - on a side note if you haven't seen that movie you simply MUST.

This blouse is yet another gingham/check item to add to my collection - I gush over my love affair with this print in an upcoming post, you lucky people have that to look forward to!  Blue and white gingham is such a classic Dorothy-esque print which makes me want to trot down the yellow brick road :)
Had a mini primarni haul last week and this gorgeous blouse was one of the items I picked up.  Yes it is rather sheer and thin but when it costs £12 it's to be expected, and the light fabric makes it perfect for Spring.

Necklace and pointed flats are also Primark purchases.  I did actually wear monochrome heels with this at work (heeled version of those flats) which I think elevates the elegance of the look however they stay firmly at work - I do not wear heels on the tube ARE YOU MAD?!!

I am considering putting together a gingham/check recent additions and wishlist post as it is a massive favourite of mine at the moment.  By the by does anyone know the formal distinction between gingham and check? I'm assuming it's to do with the uniform square pattern of the gingham and perhaps colour-ways comes into it?! Horribly geeky of me I know but it is a pressing question!

Star Style: Oscars 2014

I am recently back from New York so a bit late on the Oscars bandwagon however I still wanted to air my judgments as it’s one of my favourite events of the year, especially when my two favourite people are in attendance: Cate & Kate.  Power to the C/Kates!
My best dressed by a country mile was Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace.  Kate Hudson has been on my radar for a while, probably ever since her yellow dress ‘how to lose a guy in 10 days’ moment, you all know which one I mean!  I know that was a film piece but I do not care as it seems to generally encapsulate the way I feel about her: Best Dressed Gorgeousness!  She seems to consistently nail all her looks and I get genuinely excited to see what she’s going to wear next.  The Oscars were no exception and she did not disappoint.  Nominees take note please these are the fashion moments you should be achieving, not getting outshone by the presenters/plus ones.

Versace are what I think of as quite a va va voom brand which can tread the toes of tacky if not worn well (erm herm Heidi Klum) but Kate just looks like a breathtakingly elegant statuesque ice princess.  She belongs in the ice castle in Frozen standing alongside Elsa’s incredible sexy blue number (I don’t care if it’s a cartoon that dress is amazing!)  The colour, the fit, the draping, the ruching, the train, the make-up, the hair, the posing – somebody stop me!  The Cape.  Capes can be gorgeously dramatic when done well and add oomph to an outfit a la Gwyneth and Lupita, and Kate showcases this perfectly here.  This is a head-to-toe stunner and god damn if Kate doesn’t know how to work a red carpet!  Her smouldering confidence just elevates this dress beyond, she belongs on Mount Olympus with all the other goddesses!

Sorry couldn't help myself :S Moving swiftly on...
Talking of princesses (apologies for the excessive Disney referencing)  Lupita Nyong'o had a veritable Cinderella moment in her lovely Prada gown.  Now this one is a bit of a contentious point for me.  Had this been a stand-alone effort I would have been essentially mesmerised by this however because this is Lupita I was slightly disappointed.  Now this is hugely unfair of me as this is an excellent effort and a great result but she has had such an amazing run all throughout this awards season that I was expecting a WOW blow my socks off moment and this wasn’t it.  However she looks beautiful, the colour is divine and the princess feel of this gown is extremely appropriate for her big win – come on you all knew she had it in the bag, her performance was outstanding.  On a side note I'm going to pretend that hairband does not exist!

Pink in Elie Saab.  Yes I did just say Pink.  Pink on a Best Dressed Oscars list – huh? Have I entered some alternate universe?!  Do not get me wrong there is nothing wrong with Pink’s style, she often looks pretty cool but on a Best Dressed Oscars List?!  Hold the phone!!  Well she absolutely belongs here, in fact she belongs near the top, she left Lupita trailing in her wake which is saying something.  She deserves a round of applause!  What a stunning effort by her!  Yes it is a predictable sequin Elie Saab dress but I don’t care when someone looks as good as her wearing it.  Also how appropriate as a performance piece for Somewhere Over the Rainbow with Ruby Slippers!!  A very well thought out ensemble I thought.

Cate Blanchett is a safe bet who exudes elegance and sophistication at every turn and she succeeds again here in Armani Prive.  This isn’t my favourite look of hers or of the night but she looks so regal and elegant – I will never stop describing this woman as elegant! The colour perfectly compliments her skin tone and the embellishments on the dress are just heavenly.  She also is an absolute goddess, all hail Queens Cate & Kate!!

Who were your favourites of the night?  Were you as taken with Kate Hudson as I was?
